Different ways of seeing by Lisa Erickson

I’m a little reluctant to write this because I want people to construct their own meaning from this wild card, not adopt mine, but I’ll write a little bit about what I was thinking as I chose the materials and created the panels.

Nothing new here, just different ways of seeing. No new materials, just scraps and remnants from past projects. It’s similar to how I see research in practice—an opportunity to see things in a different way.

Intuition & practicalities

The process of choosing the fabrics from my overflowing stash was more intuitive and practical than cerebral. I’m sure texture and colour played a part, but so did my mood and practicalities like which fabrics were in the top of the bin and how much remained of each. This makes me think of the influence of the heart in research in practice and the practicalities of context.

How we see things changes

How things appear changes. The order I perceive at one moment can quickly transform into what feels like disorder. Still, there are surprising connections and beauty even in the chaos and disorder of the research process. I have much to learn about appreciating this state. I also have many persistent teachers!

In hindsight

If I was to do this over again, I’d make a third panel with all the same shapes, but they’d have velcro on the back so folks could move them around and play with their understanding of research in practice. With every project, there’s always been something that I’d do differently, and probably there always will be—research is no exception.
